Background

What began as a simple vehicle for showcasing local singer/songwriters in 1998, while also raising money for local charities, has rapidly turned into one of Vancouver’s premier arts and charity events. Initially staged at the Anza Club, the Just Singin’ Round showcase event outgrew the small venue and was relocated to the Vancouver Rowing Club where it continues to draw a loyal and growing following today.

The concept for a songwriter’s showcase is not new. It began in North America in the early 1900s as a form of low-cost entertainment in clubs. Local artists shared the stage and were invited to play original music from an acoustic styling. JSR has adapted this model, with a few modifications. Although local singer/songwriters perform original music acoustically, JSR also wanted to create an event that increased awareness and support for local charities. For a minimum donation at the door, patrons were privy to exceptional music and a full course meal while also contributing to charity. All proceeds raised at the door and through various raffles were donated to the featured charitable organization.

By blending the arts with social responsibility, JSR has created a new vehicle for people to support local artisans while also giving back to their community. For the past eight years, JSR has been offering a monthly showcase event that featured local singer/songwriters and a different charity each month. This translates into over 500 artisans and 55 charities since 1998. And with over 17,000 people having attended the various events…this has meant incredible exposure for everyone involved.

Increasing awareness and support for the charities was only the first phase of what JSR wanted to accomplish. The intention has always been to create an opportunity to work more closely with the charities and to provide them with the tools and resources necessary to sustain and grow vital community connections and programs. Many charities work in isolation, struggling to survive in a changing economy. This makes it increasingly difficult for them to continue to provide necessary services in their communities. As a result, JSR decided to restructure its relationship with the charities and has created a forum where the charities and JSR now work in partnership.

Through a series of meetings and two working retreats, JSR is now able to offer much needed support and training to the various organizations. In 2003, the JSR became a federally registered charity which further allows the foundation to expand its operations and the work it can offer the various organizations that it is in partnership with. JSR has also started promoting other events, such as Just Push Play and bringing Patch Adams to Vancouver, as another opportunity to showcase local artisans while also raising exposure for various charitable organizations.
